When Japan dared to voice its regret to Duterte when the 'comfort women' statue was erected last December 2017, President Rodrigo Duterte said the "comfort woman" statue along Roxas Boulevard is a symbol of freedom of expression, which relatives of comfort women and living comfort women are entitled to use.
"That is a constitutional right which I cannot stop. It’s prohibitive for me to do that,” Duterte told Mindanews in an interview on Friday, Jan. 12
President Duterte was the first president to categorically resist Japan's attempts / pressures to revise (some say bury) the story of the comfort and the Filipino history.
President Duterte will not act on an objection by Japan to a new statue in Manila
that commemorates the Filipino “comfort women” who were forced as sex slaves in Japanese military brothels during World War Two.
